Guide To… EV Conversion

Buying a brand new EV isn’t the only way to switch to driving an electric car.

A number of companies in Ireland are already offering conversion services, which will allow you to keep your current car but make it infinitely more efficient and environmentally friendly.

This process strips out all the unnecessary parts, such as the engine, the fuel tank and the gear box and adds the necessary battery packs and motors to your existing car. This is the ultimate form of recycling as it avoids creating tonnes of plastic, metal, oil, acid and fibre waste.

Furthermore, EV conversions are considerably cheaper than buying a new car, and can be achieved for just a few thousand euros – with the opportunity to sell the old parts you’re removing to fund part of the cost of the conversion.

In addition to mechanics who offer EV conversions, there are a number of other companies – such as New Electric Ireland – who offer courses to train you in how to convert cars.
